Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo · Security check on the parvis

The nave without the climb

The Veneranda Fabbrica's ticket for the cathedral interior, valid for the booked day and the next, with an option that adds the Duomo Museum, the archaeological area and the Scurolo di San Carlo. Pick it if the roof is not for you, or not today, and read the non-refundable line before booking.

Cathedral Direct Entrance: Terraces Not Included

About this experience

The simplest ticket on this site: the cathedral interior, and that is all, unless you add the option. The title spells out Terrace Excluded. You go straight to the security check in front of the facade, scan the barcode on the voucher, and you are in. There is no counter, no timed slot to miss and no climb. The ticket is valid for two days, the booked day and the next, with one entry per area, and the listing gives 17:50 as last entry.

The option is where this ticket gets interesting. It adds the Duomo Museum at Piazza del Duomo 12, the archaeological area under the parvis with the Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti, and the Scurolo di San Carlo, the crypt chapel where St Charles Borromeo has lain since his death in 1584. The other listings on this site do not include the Scurolo. The museum is closed on Wednesdays and the Scurolo is closed on Sundays and religious holidays, so the two-day validity earns its keep: the nave today, the rest tomorrow.

The listing states the ticket is non-refundable. The rules are the Fabbrica's: knees and shoulders covered, no luggage or large bags, no glass, no flash, no tripods, no drones, no smoking, no costumes, pets limited to assistance dogs. Everyone passes the same security check. Remember that worship is free through the north door at all times; this ticket is for visiting, not for Mass.

  • The nave: 52 columns, the meridian line of 1786, St Bartholomew Flayed and the Holy Nail in the apse vault
  • Valid two days, scan and enter, no timed slot
  • An option adding the Duomo Museum, the archaeological area and the Scurolo di San Carlo
  • The Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti, where tradition says Ambrose baptised Augustine in 387
  • The crypt of St Charles Borromeo, which no other listing here covers
  • No climb and no roof, which is the point for some visitors

How it runs

  1. BeforePlain or with the option

The plain ticket is the nave. The option adds the museum, the archaeological area and the Scurolo. Avoid Wednesday for the museum and Sunday for the Scurolo, or use the second day.

  2. 0:00Security on the parvis

Go straight to the security check in front of the cathedral and scan the voucher's barcode. Shoulders and knees covered, small bag only. Ten to thirty minutes depending on the hour.

  3. 0:10The nave

Start at the meridian line by the entrance, walk the right aisle to St Bartholomew in the transept, look up for the Holy Nail reliquary about 40 metres up in the apse vault. An hour is comfortable. Visits pause around the altar during Mass.

  4. 1:00The Scurolo, with the option

Down the stairs under the altar to the crypt chapel of St Charles Borromeo, archbishop of Milan, died 1584. Closed on Sundays and religious holidays.

  5. 1:20The archaeological area, with the option

About 27 steps down from the parvis to the fourth-century octagonal basin of the Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti, where tradition says Ambrose baptised Augustine.

  6. Day 2The museum, with the option

The Duomo Museum in the Palazzo Reale at Piazza del Duomo 12, from 10:00, closed on Wednesdays: the Treasure, the original statues and gargoyles, the stained glass, the models and the Madonnina's old iron frame.

Tips before you book

  • Go at 9:00 when the doors open. The security line is short, the nave is quiet and the light through the apse glass is at its best.
  • Take the option if you take the ticket. The Scurolo and the baptistery are the two parts of the complex that the combined ticket leaves out.
  • Stand by the meridian line at solar noon, about 25 minutes behind clock time, and watch the sunlight from the hole in the vault land on the line.
  • Keep the voucher for day two. One entry per area means you cannot re-enter the nave tomorrow, but the museum and the baptistery can wait.
  • Check the calendar for your date. Group visits pause during services and the choir closes to visitors at Mass times, six a day on weekdays.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add the terraces later?

Not to this ticket. The terraces need one of two Fabbrica tickets, both non-refundable: the terraces ticket for the roof alone, and the combined ticket for the roof with the nave and the museum. If you are not sure yet, book the combined ticket from the start.

What does the option add?

The Duomo Museum with San Gottardo, the archaeological area with the Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti, and the Scurolo di San Carlo. Each area once, within the two-day validity. The museum is closed on Wednesdays and the Scurolo on Sundays and religious holidays.

Do I need to book a time?

No. The listing says to go straight to the security check in front of the cathedral and scan the voucher barcode. Last entry is 17:50. Early morning has the shortest wait.

Is this ticket refundable?

No. The listing states it is non-refundable. The operator tours on this site list free cancellation up to 24 hours before if that matters to you.
