Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo · Terrace entrances, side of the cathedral

Just the roof: the terraces ticket

The Veneranda Fabbrica's ticket for the terraces alone: a timed slot, stairs or lift chosen at booking, and no entry to the cathedral interior. Pick it if the spires and the view are what you came for, or you have already been inside, and know that the listing states it is non-refundable.

Duomo Terraces Ticket: Cathedral Not Included

About this experience

The title says it: Cathedral Access Excluded. This ticket takes you up to the terraces and nowhere else. You choose stairs or lift at booking, the slot is timed, and the ticket is valid for one day. The lift version is the fast-track one. The stairs version is about 250 steps up a spiral staircase that starts on the north side of the cathedral, and the lift entrance is behind the Duomo, signposted for lift access. Either way you arrive on the first terrace, and the walk along the roof of the nave is a further climb on foot.

Why would anyone skip the inside? Because they were in yesterday, or because they want the roof at sunset without an hour in the nave first, or because the combined ticket is sold out for the day. The terraces open daily from 9:00; the listing gives 18:30 as closing and 17:50 as last entry, and the Fabbrica shuts them in rain, ice or strong wind. The listing states the ticket is non-refundable, so a wet forecast is a reason to wait before booking.

The rules are the Fabbrica's usual ones with a rooftop edge: no high heels, no luggage or large bags, no drones, tripods, glass or food, no non-folding strollers, and modest dress. Unaccompanied minors are not admitted, and the listing calls the ticket unsuitable for people with mobility impairments. Wheelchair users can reach the first terrace by the south lift between 10:00 and 17:00; the upper walks are stairs.

  • A timed slot on the roof of the Duomo, nothing else to queue for
  • Stairs or lift, chosen at booking; the lift version is fast-track
  • The walk along the roof of the nave among 135 spires and the flying buttresses
  • The Madonnina on the main spire, about 40 metres above the highest terrace
  • Milan laid out below, from the piazza to the Porta Nuova towers
  • Open daily from 9:00, last entry 17:50 per the listing

How it runs

  1. BeforeStairs or lift, and which hour

The lift version goes first in high season. Late afternoon has the best light on the marble; early morning has the shortest security line. Check the weather: the roof closes in rain, ice or strong wind and the ticket is non-refundable.

  2. 0:00Find the right entrance

Stairs: the north side of the cathedral, on the Galleria side. Lift: behind the Duomo, signposted for lift access. Security happens here too, with the same dress code and bag rules as the main door.

  3. 0:10Up

About 250 steps in a spiral, which most people climb in ten to fifteen minutes, or a short lift ride. Both land on the first terrace, over the transept.

  4. 0:20The first terrace

Flying buttresses at arm's length, gargoyles, and statues carved for a viewer who was never meant to get this close. This level is the limit for wheelchair users.

  5. 0:30The roof of the nave

A further climb on foot brings you onto the sloping roof of the nave and the long walk between the spires toward the facade. The Madonnina stands 108.5 metres above the piazza; nobody goes up to her.

  6. 1:00Down by the stairs

The descent is by the stairs for most visitors, which is the easy direction; one guest on the listing found the walk down easy after the lift up. You come out beside the cathedral. The nave is a separate ticket and a separate entrance.

What guests say

Great views & opportunities for photos. Taking the lift up was easy & the walk down the stairs wasn't difficult.

Lisa · Sep 2026

Climbing the stairs was the worst part (especially in the heat) but once you reach the roof [...] it's so worth it.

Kasim · Sep 2026

Fantastic. Absolutely stunning views. So glad we did this.

Tips before you book

  • Book the lift up and walk down. The ticket is for the ascent; the stairs on the way down take ten minutes and nobody minds them.
  • Aim for the last slot of the day in summer. The marble turns gold, the piazza empties and the heat on the roof drops; the listing's last entry is 17:50.
  • Shoes with grip, no heels. The upper terraces are sloping marble and high heels are refused at the entrance.
  • If the cathedral interior is on your list too, read the combined ticket page instead: it covers both over two days and is also non-refundable.
  • Carry water in a soft bottle and a small bag only. Glass, food and large bags are refused and there is no cloakroom.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go inside the cathedral with this ticket?

No. The listing's title is Cathedral Access Excluded. The nave needs one of two Fabbrica tickets, both non-refundable: the cathedral ticket for the interior alone, and the combined ticket for the interior with the roof and the museum. Worship is free through the north door for anyone who comes to pray, not to visit.

Where is the lift entrance?

Behind the Duomo, signposted for lift access, according to the listing. The stairs start on the north side of the cathedral, on the Galleria side. Both have their own security check.

How many steps are there?

About 250 on the stairs version, 251 by the most-quoted count, in a spiral. The lift lands on the first terrace; the walk along the roof of the nave is a further climb on foot for everyone.

What if the terraces close for weather?

The Fabbrica closes them in rain, ice or strong wind, and the listing states the ticket is non-refundable. Book for a day with a dry forecast or choose a guided tour with free cancellation.
